About

Who's taking you out

Mario Zepeda, one van, and a stubborn idea: the island deserves better than a loudspeaker and a souvenir stop.

We should be upfront about the size of this. Bare Cozumel is Mario Zepeda. The person who answers your message is the person who plans your day, drives the van, and walks you through San Gervasio. Nobody hands you off to whoever had a seat left, because there is nobody to hand you off to.

Mario has lived on Cozumel for five years, and has spent all five of them working out where things actually are: which cochinita stand is worth the detour, which beach is calm when the wind is up, what time San Gervasio empties out, where to eat that isn't on the pier. That is the whole product. You are not paying for a van — you are paying for five years of somebody else's trial and error.

That has a consequence worth knowing before you book: we run one quest a day. Whoever books first sets the plan, and the other experiences close for that date. It sounds like a limitation and it is — it's also why you are never queuing behind forty people waiting for the same photo.

The island tour is the long one, up to four hours: the calm west coast, the wild windward side, Punta Sur and El Cedral. The rest are short — one to two hours — and on a good day two or three of them fit together. We'll tell you honestly which combination works, including when the answer is only two.

And yes, that's the same guy playing violin in a pirate hat in the videos on the home page. It started as a joke at a beach bar and stayed. If the day ends somewhere with shade and a hammock, there's a decent chance you get a song.

We start early, before the piers empty out. When the wind turns and the east side is unswimmable, we change the plan instead of forcing the itinerary — the sea decides, not the brochure.

Inside the Cozumel Reefs National Park we follow the official rule: no sunscreen in the water. UV clothing, hats and shade are the best protection, and they don't bleach anything.
