The southwest coast of Cozumel is where the island gets it right. The reef takes the swell before it reaches you, so the water is flat, warm and clear enough to see your feet at chest depth. The palms come right down to the sand. There are no jet ski hawkers walking the beach every four minutes.
You get a lounger and shade for the day, and then you decide how ambitious you want to be. Snorkel gear is yours to use — the shore reef here holds parrotfish, sergeant majors and the occasional ray. Kayaks and paddleboards are free to take out. Or you claim a hammock at 10:30 and defend it until 3.
Lunch is not a buffet. You order from the kitchen: whole fried fish, ceviche, tacos gobernador, guacamole made when you ask for it. The bar runs on micheladas and margaritas that respect the tequila. Kids get shallow water with no drop-off, which is why families end up staying the whole day instead of the two hours they planned.
We pick you up, we bring you back, and in between nobody asks you to do anything. Some days that is the best tour on the island.
